Music has a unique power to bring people together, creating a sense of belonging and community. At Holly Lea Village, this truth resonates deeply, as recent musical events have entertained as well as strengthened the bonds among residents.
Over the past few weeks, a diverse array of performers—from talented local students to seasoned professionals—have provided moments of shared joy and connection.
Both residents and staff have enjoyed the variety of performances, says Renee Watkinson, Executive Support at Holly Lea Village. “Whatever the genre, our residents have always appreciated musical performances being held in their home. They come together from all over the Village and the Care Centre – it’s a great way for them to connect. The performances can also provide the opportunity for residents to dance, which benefits their physical wellbeing and creates a lot of enjoyment and fun.”
Some of the residents have also been members of arts societies and are former performers, teachers, and regular concert attendees.
A recent performance by the Rangi Ruru Jazz Band was a highlight. While it was a different genre to what the residents are used to, Renee says the tunes were well known and they all had a great time. “The band was of a very high calibre and the residents are very encouraging of young musicians.”
Rangi Ruru Jazz Band’s lead singer is the granddaughter of one of the residents, which made the performance even more special. “It was a very proud moment for him.”
Another recent outstanding performance was by the Canterbury String Quartet, who played a beautiful repertoire of classical pieces, to around 50 residents and family members.
